As I sit here stuffed from a wonderful dinner and an incredible day with family, I can’t help but feel incredibly fortunate for what I have in my life. I am blessed to be married to a wonderful and hilarious man. I have an incredible baby boy whose world is changing, growing, and broadening daily. I have family just a short car ride away. (And I have a lot of family, so it almost doesn’t matter which direction we drive!)

And above that, I’m thankful that everyone around me has encouraged me to find the strength to change my future. It wasn’t so long ago that I was LONGING to start my own business. I spent a good deal of time wondering how the photographers I admired found the courage to pick up their cameras and just do it and aching to do it myself. I couldn’t be where I am today without the love of those around me. I feel blessed to be walking down the road that I have chosen. And I can only hope that I can continue to grow in my craft.

Since I’m all mushy and this post very quickly turn into a warm and fuzzy sob-fest, I’ll just go ahead and post some of my favorites from a recent family session.

Emily contacted me when she was traveling to California from the East Coast. She’s a photographer herself and wanted some family photos now that her little guy is getting bigger. I’m always incredibly flattered when other photographers choose me to capture their families, and I always get a little nervous. (It’s a lot of pressure when a client knows as much about the technicalities of a shoot as I do!) But of course Emily and her husband were complete sweet hearts and it was a blast to talk shop during a shoot. And the best part was that they pretty much posed themselves.

We spent the morning wandering around the Stanford University Campus and had a blast playing around and getting completely lost. Thank you Steve Jobs for putting maps in all of our iphones. I’m not sure anyone could function on that campus without one. It’s huge!

Thank you J family for spending some time with me on your trip. I enjoyed finally getting to meet you and little Topher.

I’m so behind on my blog posts at the moment. The holidays season has hit me full force and I’m currently spending all my time either shooting, editing or designing holiday cards. So, while I SHOULD be uploading pictures for everyone to see, I’m going to share some secrets about my self instead. (Can we all just say, “I’m a procrastinator” three times fast?)

1. I have a huge addiction to Peets Coffee. Specifically, I’m addicted to non-fat lattes. (The seasonal Gingerbread latte may be the best thing I’ve ever tasted.) They’re rich, foamy and full of coffee goodness, so what’s not to love? When I walked into Peets this morning for my daily dose and was bombarded by the earthy smell of freshly ground beans, I swear I almost swooned. For those of you that aren’t local to me, Peets is hands down one of the best options out there – well worth the cost of a trip to San Francisco if you ask me!

2. I was a theater major in college. I auditioned in both New York and Chicago for conservatory schools, but opted to stay close to home when my father became ill. I still have an enormous love of theater and the art of acting. And I think my training makes me more of a social person. If I’m uncomfortable, I can fake it better than the best. I also think my theater training is the cause for my love of all things “stage” on tv. SYTYCD, Glee, Fame – you name it. If it has a stage, I probably watch it. (For even more fun facts – I’m also addicted to ANTM.) If you don’t know these acronyms, I refuse to explain. It would be way too embarrassing!

3. I’m trying to rid my house of paper towels. In an effort to be a more socially responsible person, I’ve been trying to commit myself to do away with SOMETHING that could be deemed wasteful. I really, really wanted to be cloth diapering my son, but that turned out to be a huge disaster. Paper towels seem like an easier undertaking. Although, I haven’t told my husband about this yet. HA!

4. Thanksgiving is hands down my favorite holiday. I don’t think this one even needs any explanation. I’m a compulsive over-indulger. Turkey day is my version of a caloric heaven.

5. I have a Boston Terrier named Lola. She’s a cuddly, snorty, sausage of a dog that just melts my heart. There are many times throughout the day that I’m pretty sure I birthed her myself. Her smooshy face greets me every morning by jumping into the bed and burrowing under the covers to sleep between my legs, and I love it. If I had more free time and a bigger house, I’d adopt every Boston within 50 miles of me and start my own little bean dog army. We’d be fierce.

And because every post is made better by adding photos, here is an image I shamelessly borrowed from the lovely Jennifer Kloss. She was kind enough to snap a few photos of our family for holiday cards this year. (I love you Jen!)

There are some people in the world that are sickeningly photogenic. They have no bad angles. They have perfect skin. They really just glow. I myself am not one of these rare, perfect, creatures. My goofy self requires lots of retouching! Lucky for me, Joslyn is almost disgustingly photogenic. I’m pretty sure a bad photo of her has never been taken! See, we’re friends on Facebook. I’ve seen photos of her. I knew she was gorgeous. But I really had no idea.

But really, I should have known that anyone who names their child Grayson is one of the coolest people on the planet. I mean, I did. So, I swear it’s cool.

Our day couldn’t have been more fun. And for all of your East Coasters with you perfect fall colors – I have now found a solution! Grapes. Perfectly fall colored vineyards are the new West Coast solution to seasonal colors. I love it.   (Although, Domain Carneros is gorgeous any time of year!)

Thank you D family for spending a Sunday with me. (And trusting me when I asked you to stand new the stinky wood!) I had a blast!

I really like families. I love to watch the dynamics between boys and their moms and husbands with their wives. I have so much fun finding out what silly things dads are willing to do to get a smile out of their babies. It just makes me happy. What can I say, I’m a sap!

Watching Sarah and Zak with their baby Aaron was no different. A is such a happy little guy! And I’m convinced it’s because S and Z are just happy people themselves. They were so fun to hang out with and I’m so glad they wanted to shoot at the University of Santa Clara. It is such a beautiful campus.

Thank you P family for being yourselves and letting me capture purely you.

From the moment Ari pulled Cameron out of the car, I knew I was in for it.  I’m now 100% positive that if you pull out your dictionary and flip to the “S” section, you’ll find a picture of this little guy right next to the word, “Spitfire”.  I truly don’t think there is a more perfect example than Cameron.  I had so much fun at this shoot chasing after him, learning the proper way to wield a stick as a sword and the fastest way to scale a fallen tree branch.  I did find a few knots in my stomach at the thought of my sweet little Grayson adopting Cameron’s style in a few short months, but if he’s as sweet as Cameron in the process, than I can’t complain!

Isn’t C just too sweet?

What do ruined Thanksgivings dinners have in common with photoshoots? Ok, honestly not much, but J and I did spend a good 15 minutes comparing war stories about the food holiday. And it was hilarious. (Is there anything funnier than forgotten innards?  I think not.)  I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. I love my clients. They crack me up! I have a mush 13 year old girl crush on all of them.

I was lucky enough to get a SECOND chance to shoot little miss Charlotte right after her first birthday.  She has always been a doll and now that she’s all over the place, I’m pretty sure she’s even cuter.  She’s so curious!  And happy to get into anything she could find.

Thank you D family for letting me drag you around San Francisco – and even braving the Chinatown grounds!  I had a blast.

There are two things that I really love. Ok, strike that. I’m a loving person, there are lots and lots of things I love…. coffee, purses, shoes, pumpkin pie, trashy reality tv shows… you get the idea… But two things I really love are babies and baskets. Preferably together. And putting them together, outdoors makes me giddy with glee. (Glee! That’s another thing I love!) But I digress.

I was lucky enough to shoot 6 gorgeous families on mini session day. I don’t know HOW I got so lucky, but I did. And I’m loving it!

The C family came bright and early for the shoot – and even dressed up! Aren’t they adorable. And little miss S just melted my heart. I think baby fever is an occupational hazard these days.

I can’t tell if I like this series better in color or black and white. Such a gorgeous baby!
